French fashion designer Thierry Mugler has died at the age of 73, his representatives have announced.
With a penchant for PVC, power shoulders and body-con silhouettes, Mugler transformed women into otherworldly, space-age creatures and his eponymous brand became known as an avant-garde, futuristic fashion force in the 80s an 90s. Part of a troupe of designers who pioneered splashy, theatrical fashion shows over the original restrained format, in which models silently wafted among editors, Mugler’s spectacles propelled models like Jerry Hall, Cindy Crawford and Tyra Banks to celebrity status.
Mugler’s designs were worn by stars including David Bowie and Lady Gaga as well. He created many stage costumes for Beyoncé and in 2019 designed Kim Kardashian’s famous “wet dress” for the Met Gala.
In later years, his brand became famous for perfumes, such as Angel and Alien.
“We are devastated to announce the passing of Mr Manfred Thierry Mugler on Sunday January 23rd 2022,” a post on Mugler’s official Facebook account confirmed.
A tribute posted on his Instagram page described Mugler as “a visionary whose imagination… empowered people around the world to be bolder and dream bigger every day.“
His agent told AFP news agency that he died of natural causes.
