France is one of the cheapest countries for mobile services in Europe
For the biggest type of Sim-only postpaid plan surveyed, with at least 1,000 minutes and 10 GB per month, the median price in France has more than halved in the past two years, to EUR 19.
The annual Telecompaper study compares prices for postpaid bundles across 16 European countries. In the latest edition for Q1 2019, French prices were at or below the TP16 median for all types of Sim-only plan.
The difference was up to 40 percent cheaper in France than the TP16 median for the smallest type of plan on offer in France, with up to 1 GB and 360 minutes per month, and 35 percent cheaper for the biggest plan with at least 1,000 minutes and 10GB+ data.
France also shows the highest share of plans offering some kind of benefit to customers who also take fixed services from the same operator, at 55 percent of all Sim-only plans surveyed. “The intense competition on the French market means operators are desperate to lock-in customers and avoid the recurring promotions to attract new subscribers,” said Marion ter Welle, Telecompaper senior research analyst and co-author of the EU Benchmark report. “However, all the operators offer FMC customers a discount on the monthly mobile cost, putting further downward pressure on mobile prices.”
