Eurostar Is Designing Its Next Trains for 55°C Summers

Eurostar is preparing its next generation of trains for a Europe that may be far hotter than the one its current fleet was built to cross.

The international rail operator has raised the maximum heat specification for its new Alstom trains from 45°C to 55°C. The change is intended to help critical systems, particularly air-conditioning and temperature-sensitive electronics, continue working during increasingly severe heatwaves.

The trains are expected to begin entering service in 2031 and could remain in operation for around 30 years. In practical terms, passengers may still be travelling on them in the 2060s.

A hotter technical brief

Eurostar is investing about €2 billion in up to 50 Alstom Avelia Horizon trains. The initial order covers 30 double-deck units, with options for a further 20.

The agreement gave Eurostar room to revise technical requirements before the final specifications were locked in. After another period of extreme heat across Europe, the operator decided that the original 45°C limit no longer offered enough protection for a fleet designed to operate for several decades.

“This year, the heatwave has been earlier, longer, hotter than ever,”

said Gwendoline Cazenave, Eurostar chief executive.

Her comment captures the problem facing transport companies across Europe. Trains, aircraft, roads, stations and power systems are designed around assumptions about normal operating conditions. When those assumptions shift, long-life infrastructure can become outdated before it even enters service.

Not a forecast of 55°C

The revised specification does not mean Eurostar expects London, Paris, Brussels or Amsterdam to experience 55°C air temperatures as a normal summer event.

Instead, 55°C is an engineering resilience limit. It gives air-conditioning systems, onboard electronics and other sensitive equipment more operating headroom when high outdoor temperatures combine with direct sunlight, crowded stations and continuous daily use.

A train standing in the sun can face harsher conditions than the official air temperature suggests. Equipment housings, roofs and external surfaces absorb heat, while busy services generate additional warmth inside. A higher specification therefore gives Eurostar a wider safety margin during exceptional conditions.

“I have to confess that before last week I would never have thought that we would need to buy up to 55 degrees Celsius,”

Cazenave said.

Passenger comfort is operational

For passengers, the issue is less technical. If the cooling system fails, the train may still be capable of moving, but the journey can quickly become uncomfortable and potentially unsafe.

Eurostar has already introduced short-term measures for hot weather. Staff are required to test the air-conditioning in every carriage each day, while additional maintenance capacity has been reserved for faulty cooling systems. Bottled water is also carried on board during periods of intense heat.

These precautions are sensible, but they remain reactive. Water bottles and emergency repairs help during disruption; they do not replace reliable cooling, accurate passenger information or faster decisions about removing defective carriages from service.

Eurostar could strengthen its approach with carriage-level temperature monitoring and clearer real-time communication when cooling problems occur. Passengers are generally more understanding of delays when they are told what is happening early and given realistic options.

The train is only one part

Eurostar’s decision reflects a wider shift in European rail. Operators and infrastructure managers are increasingly planning around future climate conditions rather than relying only on historical averages.

Network Rail in the United Kingdom already monitors track temperatures, introduces temporary speed restrictions and paints some sections of rail white to reduce heat absorption. Deutsche Bahn has also expanded its work on climate-resilient infrastructure, including stations, tracks and systems exposed to extreme weather.

This comparison shows the limit of Eurostar’s upgrade. A train designed to function at 55°C cannot maintain a normal service if tracks buckle, overhead lines sag, signalling equipment overheats or a terminal loses power.

Passengers expecting the new fleet to make international rail completely heatproof may therefore be disappointed. More resilient trains matter, but reliable journeys depend on the wider network being prepared as well.

A long-term purchasing decision

The most important part of Eurostar’s move is not the number itself. It is the fact that climate adaptation is now influencing billion-euro procurement decisions.

Rolling stock bought today must remain reliable through conditions that may look very different in 20 or 30 years. Designing only for the climate of the past would risk expensive retrofits, more frequent failures and worsening passenger disruption.

For Eurostar, increasing the heat limit before production begins is likely to be cheaper and more effective than trying to upgrade cooling systems after the trains are already in service.

Conclusion: Resilience becomes part of the product

Eurostar is addressing the part of the system it controls most directly: the train. Network Rail is focusing on track operations, while Deutsche Bahn is taking a broader infrastructure approach. The next competitive advantage in European rail will not come only from faster trains, better Wi-Fi or lower emissions. It will come from services that continue running when summers become hotter, infrastructure is under pressure and passengers need clear information.

Eurostar’s 55°C specification is more than a technical adjustment. It is an early admission that future rail travel must be designed for conditions that once seemed exceptional. The train may be ready. The harder question is whether the rest of Europe’s rail network will be ready with it.
