Eurostar Brings Live Rail Search to ChatGPT
Eurostar is bringing international rail planning directly into ChatGPT, becoming the first train operator to launch an official app in the conversational platform across the UK, Belgium and the Netherlands.
Rolling out globally this summer, the Eurostar app allows travellers to search for trains, compare departure times and check current fares without first visiting a booking website or opening another travel app. ChatGPT presents real-time journey information before directing the traveller to eurostar.com to complete the purchase.
It is a relatively simple integration for now—but an important one. Eurostar is placing its timetable and fare data inside the environment where a growing number of travellers are already deciding where to go and how to get there.
Planning by conversation
Travellers connect their ChatGPT account to the Eurostar app and can then ask questions naturally, by typing or speaking.
A request might be as straightforward as: “Find me a morning train from London to Paris next Friday.” But conversational search becomes more useful when the journey is less settled. A traveller could ask for the best departure time for a weekend in Brussels, compare Amsterdam and Paris for a short break, or look for an itinerary that avoids a very early start.
Traditional booking engines expect users to supply structured information: origin, destination, dates and passenger numbers. Conversational interfaces can begin earlier in the decision process, when someone has an idea rather than a finished itinerary.

The current Eurostar experience remains focused on discovery and search. Users cannot complete the entire transaction inside ChatGPT; they are transferred to Eurostar’s website to book. That handover protects Eurostar’s existing payment and customer-service infrastructure, although it also interrupts the smooth, end-to-end experience that travellers may eventually expect from AI assistants.
AI traffic is becoming measurable
Eurostar’s own figures explain why the company is moving now.
Traffic to eurostar.com from AI platforms increased fivefold between January 2025 and June 2026. In June 2026, ChatGPT generated 85% of all AI-referred visits to the website. More significantly, AI applications accounted for between 0.8% and 1% of Eurostar website bookings between May and July 2026.
One per cent may sound modest, but this is no longer experimental traffic consisting only of curious users. It is beginning to produce transactions.

François Le Doze, Chief Commercial Officer at Eurostar, said: “Search habits are changing quickly, and travellers are increasingly using conversational tools to research and plan their journeys.
“By launching the Eurostar app in ChatGPT, we are choosing to be present where our customers are already searching for information and planning their travel.
“Our goal remains the same: to make international rail travel simpler, more accessible and more attractive.”
Eurostar plans to develop the app with destination discovery, network visualisation, travel inspiration and easier access to selected fares and offers. It will also consider other conversational assistants as customer adoption grows.
A new travel storefront
The launch sits within a broader shift in travel distribution. ChatGPT is evolving from a general-purpose assistant into a platform that can host interactive third-party services. OpenAI introduced its Apps SDK with travel companies including Booking.com and Expedia among its early partners, giving travellers access to live commercial information inside a conversation. OpenAI describes these apps as experiences users can interact with directly inside ChatGPT.
Rail is following the same route. Trainline already offers an AI-powered Travel Assistant for journey-specific questions and has also launched a ChatGPT integration for route and fare discovery. Its position differs from Eurostar’s: Trainline aggregates multiple rail and coach operators, while Eurostar controls the customer relationship and the trains being sold. Trainline’s existing assistant also focuses on practical support, such as ticket conditions, refunds, and journey guidance.
For travellers comparing several European operators, an aggregator may still be more practical. Eurostar’s app is naturally limited to its own network, which covers more than 20 destinations across the UK, France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany. It will not replace a broader multimodal planner, particularly for journeys requiring regional trains, buses or flights.
Eurostar carried 20 million passengers in 2025 and currently operates 51 high-speed trains. Its future fleet will include up to 50 Alstom Celestia double-deck trains, scheduled to enter service from May 2031. The ChatGPT app is therefore not a substitute for capacity investment; it is a new digital entrance to a network Eurostar is already preparing to expand.
Conclusion
Eurostar’s real achievement is not putting a chatbot beside a timetable. It is recognising that travel discovery is moving upstream—from search engines and booking forms into conversations.
Booking.com, Expedia and Trainline are pursuing the same behavioural shift, but operators such as Eurostar have a particular advantage: they own the inventory, operational data and post-booking relationship. The next competitive step will be connecting those assets more deeply. Disruption alerts, ticket changes, loyalty benefits and complete in-chat checkout would make the experience genuinely useful beyond inspiration.
Until then, Eurostar’s ChatGPT app is best understood as a new storefront rather than a full travel agent. But storefronts matter—especially when customers are already gathering outside them.
