Who Owns the Customer in the API Connectivity Era?

The travel connectivity market is learning an uncomfortable lesson from fintech, food delivery and online travel: the company that provides the service is not always the company that owns the customer.

 

That matters more than ever as connectivity moves into API channels. A traveler may buy mobile data inside an airline app, a banking app, a hotel loyalty platform, a ride-hailing wallet or a super app. The eSIM may be powered by a specialist provider. The network may belong to a mobile operator. The activation may run through a third-party platform. But the customer? The customer probably thinks they bought connectivity from the brand they already trust.

That is the quiet power shift behind embedded connectivity.

For decades, telecom operators controlled the retail relationship. They sold the SIM, managed the number, owned the app, handled support and collected the data. Even roaming, expensive as it often was, kept the operator in the center. The customer travelled, used their home SIM, received the bill and blamed or thanked their carrier.

APIs change that.

Connectivity becomes a product component, not a destination. It appears at the moment of need, wrapped inside another journey. Flight booked? Add data for Japan. Hotel confirmed? Activate a local plan. Business trip approved? Push an eSIM to the employee’s device. The customer does not go looking for a telecom provider. Connectivity comes to them.

The brand in front wins first

In embedded models, the front-end brand has the emotional advantage. The airline knows where the passenger is going. The bank knows they are travelling abroad. The hotel knows when they arrive. The travel platform owns the booking flow.

That context is gold.

A telecom operator may have the network, but it often does not have the travel moment. An eSIM API provider may have the inventory, provisioning stack and commercial logic, but it may not have the customer’s trust. The customer-facing brand has the screen, the timing and the permission to offer something useful.

This is why API-led connectivity is not just a reseller story. It is a distribution reset.

The same thing happened in embedded finance. Most people do not think about the payment processor when they check out online. They remember the marketplace. They do not think about the banking infrastructure behind a buy-now-pay-later button. They remember the merchant experience. McKinsey has described embedded finance as a convergence between banks and customer platforms, and the same logic now fits connectivity surprisingly well.

The infrastructure provider still matters. But the interface increasingly decides who owns the relationship.

Mobile operators are not disappearing from this story. Far from it. They still control licensed spectrum, wholesale agreements, roaming relationships, compliance obligations and much of the technical foundation. Without operators, the API layer has nothing meaningful to sell.

But operators can lose visibility.

If a traveler buys a destination eSIM inside a travel app, they may never learn which underlying network carried the traffic. If activation fails, they may contact the travel platform first. If the experience is smooth, the travel brand receives the goodwill. If the price is better than roaming, the customer may blame their home operator for not offering something similar.

That is the dangerous part for telcos. Not instant revenue loss, but customer habit loss.

GSMA Intelligence has already pointed to accelerating consumer eSIM adoption, with global eSIM smartphone penetration moving from 5% at the end of 2025 to 10% by the end of 2026. The point is not just that more phones support eSIM. The point is that more customers are learning that connectivity can be installed, switched and purchased outside the old operator shop.

Once that habit forms, it is hard to reverse.

The API provider’s dilemma

The API provider sits in a fascinating but tricky position. Companies like 1GLOBAL, eSIM Go, Telna, Monty Mobile, AiraIo Partners, Yesim Partners and other embedded connectivity players can give non-telecom brands access to global data plans, provisioning, inventory and support workflows. They make connectivity programmable.

But they also face a strategic question: do they want to be invisible infrastructure, visible co-brand or full consumer brand?

Each model has trade-offs.

Invisible infrastructure scales beautifully. It lets airlines, banks, OTAs and fintechs launch connectivity without building telecom operations from scratch. But the API provider may remain unknown to the end user, which limits brand equity.

Co-branding creates trust and transparency, especially when support or refunds are involved. A traveler may feel more confident if they see who is actually powering the eSIM. But some distribution partners do not want another brand sitting beside theirs.

Full consumer brands build direct relationships, but they compete in a crowded space with Airalo, Holafly, Nomad eSIM, Ubigi, GigSky, Saily, Orange Travel and many others. That route requires marketing spend, customer support, app experience and constant pricing pressure.

So the API provider has to choose carefully. Owning the technical layer is not the same as owning the customer.

Support reveals the truth

The cleanest way to see who owns the customer is not checkout. It is support.

When everything works, ownership looks shared. The airline sold it, the API provider provisioned it, the operator delivered it and the traveler connected. Lovely.

When activation fails, reality appears.

Who answers the ticket? Who approves the refund? Who explains why the QR code was scanned on the wrong device? Who tells the customer that their phone is locked, their destination is not covered, or their plan has expired? Who takes the reputational hit when the landing experience collapses?

This is where many embedded connectivity offers are still immature. Selling eSIMs is easy compared with managing failed activations, unclear compatibility, refund rules and network complaints across countries.

The best API providers will not win only because they have many destinations. They will win because they help partners handle the messy human parts of telecom.

Data is the real battleground

Customer ownership is also about data. Not creepy data. Useful data.

A travel platform may know the destination, trip length and booking class. A bank may know card usage abroad. A corporate travel platform may know employee travel patterns. A connectivity provider may know activation success, data usage, top-up behavior and destination demand. An operator may know network performance.

When these signals are combined responsibly, embedded connectivity becomes smarter. Offers can appear at the right moment, plans can match real usage and support can become more proactive.

But this also raises governance questions. Who can market to the customer later? Who can recommend a top-up? Who can see usage patterns? Who is responsible for privacy, consent and compliance?

The customer may not care about the back-end structure, but regulators and enterprise buyers will.

Not every brand should sell connectivity

There is a temptation right now to say every travel brand should add eSIMs. That is not quite true.

Connectivity fits best where the brand has a real travel moment, a trusted app and a reason to help the customer stay connected. Airlines, OTAs, banks, hotels, corporate travel platforms and mobility apps make sense. Random lifestyle apps probably do not.

There is also a quality threshold. If the partner cannot explain compatibility, handle basic support or place the offer naturally, the eSIM becomes a gimmick. Bad embedded connectivity feels like an upsell. Good embedded connectivity feels like someone removed a problem before it became annoying.

That difference matters.

The market is moving fast

Juniper Research reported that travel eSIM package revenue was expected to reach $1.8 billion by the end of 2025, up from $989 million in 2024. That kind of growth attracts everyone: operators, travel brands, eSIM marketplaces, API platforms, fintechs and enterprise mobility providers.

GSMA has also noted operators moving into travel eSIM offers, business eSIM use cases and new on-demand connectivity models. In other words, telcos have noticed. They are not standing still.

The next phase will not be simple reseller pages with destination plans. It will be embedded connectivity inside booking flows, expense platforms, airline apps, banking apps and enterprise mobility stacks.

That is where the ownership question becomes sharper.

The real conclusion

So, who owns the customer when connectivity is sold through an API?

The honest answer is: whoever owns the moment of trust.

Operators own the network. API providers own the orchestration. Travel and fintech platforms often own the customer interface. But the customer does not think in telecom architecture. They remember who made the problem disappear.

That is why the market will likely split. Consumer eSIM brands such as Airalo, Holafly, Ubigi, Nomad eSIM, Saily and GigSky will keep fighting for direct traveler attention. Operator-backed offers from groups like Orange, Vodafone and others will try to defend roaming relevance with stronger digital propositions. API-first players will quietly power the next wave of embedded connectivity, especially for brands that want revenue without becoming telecom companies.

The winner will not simply be the cheapest plan or the biggest coverage map. It will be the player that understands the full chain: timing, trust, activation, support, refunds, data governance and brand control.

Connectivity is becoming invisible. Customer ownership is becoming very visible.
