Amdocs and Cielo Bring eSIM to Brazil’s Payment Terminals

A failed card payment is rarely described as a connectivity problem. To the merchant, it is simply a lost sale, an impatient customer and a payment terminal that has stopped doing its one essential job.

 

That is the operational problem behind a new agreement between Amdocs and Cielo. The Brazilian payments provider has selected Amdocs Remote eSIM Manager to modernize connectivity across its nationwide fleet of payment terminals, replacing a traditional physical-SIM model with remotely managed, software-defined connectivity.

From fixed SIMs to flexible connectivity

The deployment will use Amdocs’ eSIM Cloud Platform to provision and manage mobile profiles remotely. Instead of leaving each terminal tied to the network selected when its SIM was installed, Cielo will be able to activate profiles, monitor network quality and switch between mobile operators when conditions require it.

For a widely distributed payments business, that flexibility matters. Mobile coverage is rarely uniform, particularly across a market as geographically large and operationally varied as Brazil. A network that performs well in one city, shopping centre or transport hub may be weaker elsewhere. Remote switching gives Cielo another way to keep terminals online without dispatching technicians or physically replacing SIM cards.

The planned capabilities include eSIM lifecycle management, secure remote activation, real-time quality monitoring, connectivity optimization and intelligent orchestration across the terminal estate. In practical terms, the connectivity layer becomes something Cielo can observe and adjust rather than simply accept.

Why payment terminals are a serious eSIM use case

Payment terminals are a good example of where enterprise eSIM can create value without attracting much consumer attention. These are distributed, often unattended or semi-managed devices expected to work continuously for years. Their data consumption may be modest, but the commercial cost of losing connectivity at the wrong moment can be far greater than the connectivity bill itself.

Cielo describes uninterrupted operation as central to its market proposition, noting that its technology estate supports Brazilian merchants around the clock. The wider payments market is also becoming more dependent on reliable in-store digital infrastructure. Worldpay reports that digital wallets represented 33% of global in-person spending in 2025, while Brazil is among the markets where wallets increasingly connect directly to account-to-account payment systems.

That makes terminal resilience more important, not less. New payment methods may change what happens at checkout, but they do not eliminate the need for dependable connectivity between the merchant, acquirer, bank and payment network.

The missing deployment details

The announcement makes a strong case for the technology, although several practical details remain unanswered. Amdocs and Cielo have not disclosed the number of terminals covered, the deployment timetable, which operators will participate or how switching decisions will balance signal quality, cost, contractual commitments and security policies.

Those details will determine how transformative the project becomes. Dynamic network switching sounds straightforward, but large-scale orchestration requires clear rules, accurate monitoring and careful control of profile changes. Poorly designed automation could replace one form of operational complexity with another.

This model will not be equally valuable for every merchant environment. A small, fixed-location estate with reliable fibre or Wi-Fi and a single mobile backup may gain little from sophisticated eSIM orchestration. Multi-operator roaming SIMs, dual-SIM hardware or managed cellular services may remain perfectly adequate. The stronger business case appears in large fleets spread across regions where connectivity quality varies and physical interventions are expensive.

Conclusion

The Cielo agreement reflects a wider shift in enterprise connectivity. GSMA’s SGP.32 specification was designed to make remote provisioning more practical for constrained IoT devices, while vendors such as Giesecke+Devrient now offer SGP.32-based fleet management and remote operator switching. IDEMIA, Tele2 IoT and Cisco have also launched a commercial end-to-end SGP.32 proposition combining certified eSIM infrastructure, connectivity and orchestration.

Amdocs is entering that market conversation with a particularly visible payments deployment. The real test will not be whether profiles can be downloaded remotely; that is rapidly becoming expected. It will be whether Cielo can translate orchestration into fewer failed transactions, fewer field visits and measurable improvements in terminal availability.

If it does, eSIM will stop looking like a component upgrade and start looking like payments infrastructure.
