Chinese Carriers Push eSIM Into the 2.0 Security Era

At MWC Shanghai 2026, eSIM was no longer treated like a convenient smartphone feature. The message from China’s telecom ecosystem was bigger: in the AI era, connectivity is becoming the condition for intelligence. The event’s AI+eSIM session was presented by China Unicom and positioned eSIM-enabled mobile phones as entering trial commercial launch, just as AI applications begin scaling end-to-end.

 

Chen Fengwei, Deputy General Manager of China Unicom Huasheng Communications Co., Ltd., put it neatly at the eSIM Summit:

“In the internet era, we often said ‘losing the network means losing contact.’ But in the AI era, the nature of connectivity has changed — it’s now ‘losing the network means losing intelligence.’”

That captures where telecom is heading. Faster pipes still matter. But AI devices, wearables, connected vehicles, robots and edge terminals need continuity, identity, authentication and security. A disconnected AI device is not just offline; it may be functionally useless.

MWC Shanghai’s official eSIM Zone framed China’s market as moving from ecosystem building into commercial deployment, with eSIM shifting from a premium feature to a default capability across smartphones and connected devices. GSMA-linked event data points to eSIM smartphones rising to billions by 2030, while operators offering eSIM have expanded sharply worldwide.

From access to assurance

The original eSIM story was simple: remove the plastic SIM, save space, make activation easier. That story is now too small.

The next phase is eSIM as a security and identity layer. In the supplied MWC Shanghai briefing, Uniic described the move from eSIM 1.0, focused on communication and embedded form factor, to eSIM 2.0, where the module becomes a trusted identity carrier, sensing information centre and device-cloud connectivity hub.

If an AI terminal moves between cellular, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and satellite environments, it needs a trusted anchor that can authenticate it safely and quickly. This is where eSIM overlaps with digital identity, device security and satellite-terrestrial connectivity.

Uniic used the event to launch a new-generation satellite-terrestrial integrated AI eSIM. The company and China Unicom also presented a “tap-to-connect” service model designed to reduce the offline process of scanning barcodes and manually downloading profiles.

This matters because eSIM still has a UX problem. QR codes work well until they do not. Activation journeys can feel fragile, especially for mainstream users and retail staff. A tap-based flow is not cosmetic; it is the simplification eSIM needs if it is going to become mass-market infrastructure.

China changes the scale question

China’s role in eSIM has always been complicated. The opportunity is huge, but so are the regulatory and security sensitivities. ABI Research has argued that China Unicom is spearheading the consumer eSIM rollout in China, with annual eSIM-enabled smartphone shipments expected to grow from 17 million in 2026 to 125 million by 2030.

That volume changes the discussion for chipset makers, RSP vendors, device brands and operators. MWC Shanghai’s eSIM Summit also made clear that the opportunity is broader than smartphones, covering consumer electronics, IoT, AI terminals and enterprise connectivity.

Apple pushed eSIM visibility in markets such as the US, but China could push scale through Honor, Oppo, Xiaomi, Vivo, Huawei, industrial terminals, connected mobility devices and AI hardware. This is where the market becomes less iPhone-centric and more ecosystem-driven.

Beyond bandwidth wars

The carrier message was just as important as the chip story. China Unicom signalled that it wants to move beyond “bandwidth wars” and compete on deterministic connectivity, accessible computing power, perceptible services and trustworthy security.

That phrase sounds very operator-like, but the direction is right. Selling gigabytes alone is becoming a weak business model. The real value is in guaranteeing that devices, employees, vehicles and machines remain connected under the right policy, with the right level of trust.

We are seeing the same logic elsewhere. Vodafone Business talks increasingly about IoT platforms and managed connectivity. Thales and G+D sit deeper in the eSIM security and provisioning layer. Redtea Mobile, Valid, Quectel, Lenovo Connect and Wireless Logic represent different parts of the same shift: eSIM is becoming infrastructure for orchestration, not just a SIM replacement.

Juniper Research also expects strong growth across eSIM and iSIM devices through 2030, driven by automation, cloud connectivity, remote provisioning and IoT use cases. Connectivity is moving from a product sold one device at a time to a programmable layer managed across fleets, apps and platforms.

The part still missing

There is a small trap in all this excitement. “AI eSIM” can easily become another buzzword unless the industry explains the benefits in human terms.

For consumers, the promise is not a security hub. It is a phone, watch, car, robot or camera that connects without drama. For enterprises, it is fewer dead devices, cleaner provisioning, stronger security and less manual work. For operators, it is a chance to stop competing only on price and start selling trust, resilience and service quality.

This will not be equally relevant to everyone. A traveler buying a simple seven-day eSIM for Italy does not need a satellite-terrestrial AI identity layer. A small MVNO without strong provisioning systems may not be ready either. But for connected vehicles, AI hardware, industrial IoT, smart retail, robotics and enterprise mobility, the direction makes sense.

Final thoughts about eSIM 2.0

The most interesting thing about MWC Shanghai 2026 was not that China talked about eSIM. It was that China talked about eSIM as part of AI infrastructure.

That is a serious shift. In travel eSIM, the market has mostly focused on price, destinations, apps and unlimited plans. In enterprise IoT, the conversation has moved toward lifecycle management and remote provisioning. China’s latest eSIM narrative adds another layer: trusted connectivity for intelligent terminals.

Compared with players such as Thales, G+D, Redtea Mobile, Valid or Wireless Logic, China Unicom and Uniic are positioning the story closer to national-scale infrastructure and AI device readiness. The winners will not be the companies shouting “AI” the loudest. They will make connectivity quieter, safer and harder to break.
