China Forms AI-eSIM Committee for the IoT Era

The AI-eSIM Professional Committee of the China Association of Communications Enterprises was established on July 3 during the China Information and Communication Industry Development High-Level Forum. China Mobile Internet of Things Co. will chair it, with Tianyi IoT, Unicom Huasheng, Volcano Engine, Tencent Cloud and Guanan Information named as vice chairs. More than 40 companies are involved, covering telecom operators, chip design, algorithm research, security services and AI model applications. The group held its first member meeting and industry seminar on July 4.
That may sound bureaucratic. In telecom, it usually means a technology is moving from demo stage toward infrastructure.
Why AI-eSIM matters
The phrase AI-eSIM still needs careful handling. It is not, at least for now, a global GSMA standard in the way SGP.32 is. China Mobile is using the term for a new class of connected-device identity: an embedded SIM layer combined with device security, cloud model access and some level of intelligent decisioning.
A previous TechNode report said China Mobile planned to launch an AI-eSIM product at its 2026 Mobile Cloud Conference, describing it as an “intelligent brain” able to dispatch cloud-based models in real time. Early use cases included AI toys and smart wearables, while industrial scenarios such as robotics and drones were linked to the product’s hardware-level security chip and unique device identity.
This is where the story becomes bigger than China Mobile. In IoT, the SIM is no longer only a network credential. It is becoming part of the control plane: who the device is, which network it can use, and how it behaves when cloud AI joins the service.
China is not a side market
China matters because it is not experimenting from the edge. IoT Analytics estimates that cellular IoT connections reached 4.7 billion in 2025 and could hit 9.2 billion by 2030. The same research placed China Mobile first among cellular IoT operators by revenue share in 2025. China Mobile’s own 2025 results said its IoT card connections reached 1.48 billion and that its AIoT platform had become the world’s largest connection management platform.

That scale changes the meaning of AI-eSIM. In Europe or North America, the eSIM conversation still often circles around smartphones, travel eSIMs and enterprise fleet connectivity. In China, the heavier question is what happens when millions of endpoints — meters, vehicles, drones, wearables, cameras and robotics systems — need identity, connectivity, security and AI coordination at once.
The global trend behind it
Globally, IoT eSIM is already shifting from promise to implementation. GSMA lists SGP.32, its eSIM IoT technical specification, as active, with version 1.3 published in May 2026. The point is simple: IoT devices need remote profile management without a screen, app or person standing beside them.
This is why IoT connectivity players are pushing SGP.32-ready models. The market is moving away from “ship it with one SIM and hope the roaming agreement lasts” toward flexible profile orchestration. For simple local deployments, physical SIMs or fixed operator profiles may still be enough. For long-life, regulated or high-volume devices, eSIM profile control becomes harder to ignore.

China Mobile’s AI-eSIM committee adds a different flavour: not only remote provisioning, but AI-native device identity and decisioning. That is interesting, but it also raises the bar. Security, interoperability, certification and cross-border compliance will matter more than marketing language.
Conclusion
The real story is not that China Mobile created another telecom committee. The real story is that eSIM is being pulled into the AI infrastructure debate.
Compared with global players focused on SGP.32 orchestration, China Mobile seems to be aiming higher up the stack: identity, connectivity, device intelligence and model access in one industrial framework. That could be powerful for China’s domestic IoT ecosystem, especially in smart manufacturing, mobility, drones and robotics. But it is not automatically a global template. Outside China, enterprises will still compare it with more open, standards-led approaches from GSMA-aligned IoT connectivity providers.
