BT and Ivanti Make Enterprise eSIM Deployment Easier

BT Business and Ivanti have launched a new capability that lets organisations install and activate eSIMs for managed Android devices directly from a Mobile Device Management platform. The companies call it a telco-first move: instead of shipping SIM cards or scanning QR codes, businesses can prepare connectivity for large Android fleets through one managed digital workflow. Deployments that once took days can be reduced to minutes, with devices either installing eSIMs automatically or through a short guided process.

 

That sounds like a back-office feature. It is bigger than that. Devices can be enrolled remotely, apps pushed remotely and security policies applied remotely. But mobile connectivity has often remained oddly manual. This announcement brings the SIM into the same operational layer as the device itself.

Why Android timing matters

The timing is not accidental. Android 15 added platform APIs that allow IT administrators to remotely provision eSIM profiles onto managed devices, including new controls around managed SIMs and managed subscriptions. On company-owned devices, admins can download, delete and, where supported, silently activate eSIM profiles after download. BYOD is different: users retain more control and can delete the eSIM themselves.

The cleanest fit is a corporate-owned Android estate: field engineers, retail staff, logistics teams, healthcare workers or rugged devices. For a small company with mixed personal phones, this may be too much process. For an organisation rolling out thousands of devices, it is unglamorous automation that saves courier costs, support tickets and onboarding delays.

BT already positions Mobile Device Management as a way to centralise setup, updates, security policies and administration across device fleets. Adding eSIM activation into that workflow is the logical next step: connectivity becomes part of provisioning, not an afterthought.

What BT and Ivanti are solving

The old eSIM experience was built around the individual user: receive a QR code, scan it, install the profile, check the right line is active, and hope nothing fails. That works for a traveller buying one eSIM before a trip. It does not scale elegantly for enterprise.

BT and Ivanti are trying to remove that hand-off. Android provides the device-side ecosystem, Ivanti provides the management capability, and BT brings the operator connectivity layer. The partnership gives customers a consistent deployment route and points toward future services built around secure, remotely managed connectivity.

The keyword is “control”. Enterprise eSIM is no longer only about replacing plastic. It is about who installs the profile, who removes it, who pays for data, and what happens when an employee leaves or a device is reassigned.

The competitive context

This sits in a different lane from most business eSIM offers. Travel eSIM providers such as Airalo for Business and Holafly for Business focus mainly on employee travel connectivity, cost visibility and easier international data assignment. Airalo promotes business eSIMs across 200+ destinations; Holafly for Business is positioned around managing connectivity costs for employees abroad.

Enterprise connectivity specialists such as 1GLOBAL operate closer to the infrastructure layer, with eSIM platforms for operators, IoT and global deployments. 1GLOBAL says its GSMA-certified platform can generate, host and install eSIM profiles over the air.

BT and Ivanti are playing a more operator-enterprise game: not “buy your employee a travel eSIM”, but “make mobile connectivity part of managed endpoint deployment”. Once connectivity is tied into device policy, security and lifecycle management, mobile data stops looking like a disposable add-on.

What could be clearer is compatibility. Google notes that eSIM management depends on the EMM flow, device ownership model, platform version and carrier availability. Buyers will want practical answers on Android versions, OEMs, BT plans, Ivanti products and silent activation limits.

Conclusion

This is not the flashiest eSIM story of the year, but it may be one of the more meaningful ones for enterprise mobility. Consumer eSIM made connectivity feel lighter. Travel eSIM made roaming less painful. Now operator-led MDM eSIM provisioning is making connectivity operational.

BT and Ivanti are not trying to beat Airalo or Holafly at travel convenience, and they are not playing exactly the same game as global IoT platforms. Their bet is narrower and more enterprise-shaped: the SIM should disappear into the device management workflow.

For companies still managing SIMs with spreadsheets, QR codes and manual activation emails, this launch is a clear sign that the old process is starting to look very dated.
