Briant Mobile: How eSIM Opens New Revenue Paths for ISPs

For a broadband provider, growth usually comes with a postcode attached. You can sell where your network reaches, or where a wholesale partner lets you operate. Mobile changes that equation.

Briant Broadband has announced Briant Mobile, a nationwide service powered by mobile platform provider data2go.mobi. According to the launch announcement, the service is available immediately, offering data plans activated through eSIM.

The interesting part is how Briant got there. By using an external platform and digital SIM delivery, the independent alternative network operator and internet service provider has added mobile without taking on the traditional physical SIM supply chain.

That makes this a story about the economics of becoming a broader connectivity business, rather than simply another eSIM launch.

A practical way in

Briant already offers broadband and Voice over Internet Protocol services. Mobile gives it another product to put in front of customers who already know the brand.

Historically, that expansion could involve upfront platform costs, SIM procurement, fulfilment and additional operational processes. For a smaller provider, the potential revenue might look attractive while the effort required to get started did not.

data2go says its platform addresses that problem through eSIM technology and a success-sharing commercial model with a low start-up cost. The announcement does not disclose the fee, revenue split or minimum commitments, so the economics cannot yet be independently assessed.

“We have always seen mobile as a natural addition to our broadband and VoIP services, but the traditional onboarding costs and supply chain requirements made it difficult to justify,” said Adrian Bain, Managing Director of Briant Broadband. “data2go gave us a practical route into mobile. Its eSIM platform removed much of the operational complexity and allowed us to bring Briant Mobile to market quickly.”

There are two separate advantages here. eSIM removes the need to distribute a physical card for compatible devices. The platform partnership handles functions Briant would otherwise have to source or organise.

On its website, data2go describes a broader offering covering eSIM provisioning, mobile network operator relationships, fulfilment, support and billing. However, the launch announcement does not specify the exact division of responsibilities for Briant Mobile.

Beyond the fibre footprint

A household generally buys one broadband connection. It may buy several mobile subscriptions.

That difference allows Briant to increase revenue from an existing relationship without first winning another broadband installation. Mobile also creates a potential route to customers outside the geographical boundaries of its own fibre network.

The qualification matters: a nationally available mobile product does not guarantee equally strong coverage everywhere, and it does not automatically create nationwide brand recognition. Distribution still needs work.

Nor does adding mobile automatically improve retention. Customers need a reason to buy it from their broadband provider: useful pricing, convenient account management, dependable support or a genuinely attractive combination of services.

“ISPs and Altnets need cost-effective ways to diversify revenue and strengthen customer retention,” said Chandru Mullaparthi, CEO of data2go. “Our success-sharing model and eSIM technology are designed to make that possible. Briant Broadband is a strong example of how an independent Altnet / ISP can add mobile without building the traditional operational infrastructure around it.”

Ofcom’s Connected Nations reporting tracks both broadband availability and take-up. That distinction is relevant here: building access and turning access into paying customer relationships are different challenges. Mobile could broaden an Altnet’s revenue base, but it cannot substitute for selling the fibre network it has already built.

The details that matter

For customers, the practical question is what Briant Mobile actually includes.

The supplied announcement confirms data plans and eSIM activation. It does not establish whether those plans include a UK mobile number, conventional voice calls, SMS or number portability. Those features should not be assumed simply because the product is called “Mobile”.

Before switching or buying, customers need clarity on:

  • The underlying UK network and coverage where they actually use their phone.
  • Plan prices, validity, renewal terms and any speed or usage restrictions.
  • Whether calls, SMS and number transfers are supported.
  • Device compatibility, roaming conditions and the support process.

An eSIM offering will not suit someone whose handset lacks eSIM support unless a physical SIM option is also available. Equally, travellers should check international allowances rather than assume nationwide UK availability means an overseas roaming package.

Publishing these details clearly would strengthen the proposition. The launch explains why mobile is easier for Briant to offer; customers still need to understand why it is worth choosing.

Bottom Line

Briant’s move fits a wider shift: businesses with established customer relationships can increasingly distribute mobile services through specialist infrastructure partners.

It is not an uncontested opportunity. Transatel already markets branded mobile services specifically to UK ISPs, using EE’s network. For providers evaluating partners, that is a relevant alternative to compare on capabilities, support responsibilities and commercial terms.

Elsewhere, N26 launched local mobile plans in Germany with 1GLOBAL in 2025 and expanded the offering to Spain in June 2026, according to the bank’s announcements. That is a different distribution channel, but the same underlying logic: sell connectivity through a brand customers already use.

data2go’s stated distinction is its accessible entry model for smaller providers. Whether that becomes a lasting advantage depends on the margins and service experience after launch.

For Alertify, the consequential change is that an Altnet’s addressable market need not end at its fibre footprint. But easier entry also means more competition. Briant’s real test will be turning an existing broadband relationship into a mobile proposition customers actively prefer.
