The fifth generation of mobile networks recorded another year of surprising growth. After adding nearly half a billion connections in 2022, the positive evolution of 5G will continue this year, driven by enterprise subscriptions and cross-industry adoption.
The number of 5G connections increased by 76% worldwide between 2021 and 2022, reaching 1.05 billion. Recent forecasts point to them being close to two billion by the end of this year.
Throughout 2022, 455 million 5G technology users will have been added worldwide, according to data from Omdia, cited by 5G Americas. Overall, the number represents a sequential quarterly growth of 14%, from 922 million in Q3 2022 to 1.05 billion in Q4 2022.
North America Leads the World in 5G Connection Volume: What’s Next for 5G?
According to data from the consultancy, it is expected that 5G technology will continue to accelerate in 2023, approaching two billion and reaching 5.9 billion at the end of 2027.
North America is the leader in 5G connection volume, with a total of 119 million 5G connections and 507 million LTE connections at the end of the fourth quarter of 2022. The 5G penetration rate in the North American market is approaching 32%, with the addition of 52 million connections in one year, an increase of 78% compared to the fourth quarter of 2021.
Estimates point to a total of 215 million 5G connections in 2023. 5G Americas cites Ericsson, which indicates that total global mobile data traffic reached 118 exabytes (EB) per month in 2022 and is expected to almost quadruple to reach 325 EB per month in 2028.
Globally, the number of commercial 5G networks has reached 259, according to data from TeleGeography and 5G Americas. The figure is expected to increase to 390 by the end of 2023 and to 403 by the end of 2025, representing strong growth in 5G network investment in many regions of the world.
