Telefónica and Crout Launch 2CoreSIM for Critical IoT

Telefónica Deutschland has partnered with German IoT specialist Crout to launch 2CoreSIM, a new connectivity solution for companies where losing mobile service is not just annoying, but operationally expensive. Think cold-chain monitoring, cash-in-transit vehicles, healthcare data, industrial sensors, security systems, water infrastructure, flood alerts and backup connections. These are not use cases where “the signal came back later” is good enough.

 

The idea is simple, but useful: 2CoreSIM puts two independent network profiles on one SIM card. One profile uses Telefónica Deutschland’s mobile network; the second connects through the Maltese operator Melita’s network and international roaming footprint. When reception is poor or a technical disruption hits, the SIM can switch automatically to the alternative profile. Telefónica says the approach creates two separate infrastructures from the core network down to the radio cell.

More than classic roaming

That distinction matters. Traditional roaming already gives devices access to other networks, but 2CoreSIM is positioned as something more deliberate: resilience designed into the SIM itself. The switching logic sits on the card, inside the IoT device, so companies do not need an extra app or manual profile management every time conditions change.

Jörg Kablitz, Chief Partner & Wholesale Officer at Telefónica Deutschland, framed the need clearly, saying companies require “connectivity that works even in the event of a disruption.” Crout CEO Frank Kiesewetter added that the solution “embeds reliability directly into the SIM card.” For many enterprise IoT buyers, that is exactly the shift: connectivity is no longer a supporting line item. It is part of the process.

Why this is timely

2CoreSIM arrives as IoT eSIM architecture is becoming more flexible and more strategic. The GSMA’s SGP.32 specification focuses on remote provisioning and management of eUICCs in IoT devices, especially devices that may be constrained, remote or difficult to touch physically. In plain language: the industry is moving toward SIMs that can be managed, updated and steered without sending someone to the device.

This is also where competition is getting interesting. KORE’s OmniSIM, for example, also focuses on multiple carrier profiles and remote over-the-air provisioning. Eseye’s AnyNet SMARTconnect takes a slightly different route, putting connectivity intelligence and optimisation closer to the device. 2CoreSIM sits in that same broader market conversation, but with a specific German operator-plus-partner model and a clearly named second network layer through Melita.

What still needs watching

The announcement is strong on architecture and use cases, but lighter on commercial detail. Public information does not yet spell out pricing, contractual SLAs, supported SIM form factors, switching thresholds, latency impact during failover, or how broadly Melita’s roaming footprint will behave in specific countries and sectors. Those are the questions serious buyers will ask before placing this into critical infrastructure.

It is also not for every IoT deployment. A low-cost asset tracker that sends non-urgent location pings once a day may not need this level of resilience. For those cases, simpler multi-network IoT SIMs, eUICC platforms, or cost-first providers such as 1NCE-style models may be enough. But for refrigerated pharma, security, utilities, industrial backup and alarm systems, the cost of a missed message can quickly outweigh the cost of stronger connectivity.

Conclusion

The interesting part of 2CoreSIM is not that it adds another network. The market already has plenty of “global IoT SIM” language. The interesting part is that Telefónica Deutschland and Crout are treating resilience as a product feature, not a vague promise. That is where enterprise connectivity is heading: away from coverage maps as marketing, and toward architecture that admits failure can happen and plans for it.
